Bronchiectasis is a consequence of inflammation and destruction of the structural components of the bronchial walls. When an episode is specifically infectious it can initiate bronchiectasis, patients will describe severe pneumonia followed by chronic cough and sputum production. Alternatively, if there are no initiation events, dramatic descriptions are addressed to the insidious onset of symptoms. Bronchiectasis is an abnormal and permanent dilation of the bronchi. It can be either focal, involving the airways or a limited region of the lung parenchyma, or it can be diffuse, involving the airways in a wider distribution.
