This article is a review of the current concepts for operatively managing carious lesions extending to dentin using biomaterials. The population worldwide affected by dental caries is increasing and caries prevention and tooth restoration treatments continue to grow in importance for healthcare providers. Despite of reasonable outcomes and concerns about clinical performance, biomaterials play a vital role in dental cavities restorations. Strategies for minimally invasive caries can be deployed depending on the risk of caries, the proximity of the pulp, the positioning of the cavity in relation to the gingival line, among clinical procedures factors like the dental dam positioning, the moisture control or the ease of access. Since COVID-19 there is an increasing care for lowering the risks of infection transmission by reducing the aerosol production and limiting the chair time. Also, it is cited in recent documentations an increase appearance of deep dental cavities related to “Mask Mouth Syndrome”.
