Twenty-six species of the genus Clematis (Ranunculaceae family) are used in traditional medicine around the world for different diseases such as: nervous disorders, gout, malaria, dysentery, rheumatism, asthma, because of their antibacterial, analgesic, anti-inflammatory and antitumor properties. However, about 90% of the 355 species identified of this genus, have not been explored yet phytochemically, biologically and pharmacologically. Clematis vitalba L.is a wild, indigenous specie, easily accessible from the plain to the low mountainous area. The specie is little studied and exploited, although its antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties that have been attributed to flavones (vitalbozide = p-cumaroyl-isovitexin) are known. We have studied this specie in order to identify the bioactive constituents, to establish the technological process for obtaining dry extracts (laboratory phase), and develop few control methods for the extracts obtained, which can be evaluated biologically and pharmacologically in a future research. KEY WORDS: Clematis, extracts, saponosides, flavonoids, spectrophotometry.
