The main aim of the present paper is to improve the mechanical characteristics of hip prostheses obtained by selective laser sintering (SLS) and to extend their life span.Following the production process in these medical devices, internal tensions of the first order and the second order are found. These tensions are responsible for the eventual failure of the prostheses after a period of several years after implantation. That’s the reasonwhy there`s the need to eliminate them, with thermal treatments being the main method. Hip prostheses made of metal powders immediately after sintering and some that went through a thermal stress relief process were investigated. The obtained results show the substantial improvement of the mechanical characteristics after the treatment, which can be correlated with a longer life span for the prostheses.
