Numerous studies have shown that natural polyphenols could be used for the prevention and treatment of cancer. Potential mechanisms include their antioxidant, anti-inflammatory activity, as well as modulation of molecular events involved in carcinogenesis. It has been experimentally demonstrated that some polyphenols including apigenin, luteolin, quercetin, genistein, epigallocatechin gallate, resveratrol, regulate signaling pathways involved in the formation, progression and metastasis of cancer. The current review summarizes the anticancer efficacy of some polyphenols and the potential mechanisms of action, which were based on epidemiological, in vitro, in vivo and clinical data. Thus, understanding the effects polyphenols have on the signaling pathways leading to cancer will lead to better designed targeted therapies with less toxicity for cancer treatment.
