Background: Taking into account the fact that the predictability of the pulp capping has increased considerably with the development of bioceramic materials, this treatment method should be the first choice in the therapy of reversible pulpitis.
Aim: The aim of this study was to evaluate the clinical success of mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) as pulp capping material for indirect and direct pulp capping in carious permanent teeth.
Materials and methods: Indirect pulp capping was done for 9 frontal teeth of 9 patients with deep caries lesions and direct pulp capping was done for 12 molars of 10 patients with deep caries lesions. Patients were recalled at 1, 3, 6, 12 and 24 months to evaluate the clinical success of the treatment outcome. The materials used in the restoration were: BIO MTA – CERKAMED as an intermediate base filling material, Fuji II LC Capsule – GC as the actual base filling material, CLEARFIL SE BOND – Kuraray as an adhesive system, Gradia Direct – GC as a definitive restoration material.
Results: The results obtained reveal a success rate of 86%. The indirect pulp capping performed at the level of the front teeth presented a success rate of 89%, and the direct pulp capping performed at the level of the molars 84%. The main recorded failure factor is the occurrence of pulpal complications.
Conclusion: Taking into account the fact that the predictability of the pulp capping has increased considerably with the development of bioceramic materials, this treatment method should be the first choice in the therapy of reversible pulpitis. In the era of minimally invasive biomimetic dentistry, MTA offers results with a success rate of vital dental pulp therapy that has increased to 80-90%.
