Bronchiectasis (bronchi, airways; ectasia, dilatation) is morphologically the term used to describe abnormal and irreversible dilatations and often thick-walled bronchi. This is an anatomical definition and is believed to have evolved from Laennec’s original 1819 description of ectatic bronchi in pathology. Bronchiectasis represents the final stage of the pathological processes that cause the destruction of the bronchial wall and the surrounding supporting tissues. Clinical manifestations include chronic cough and frequent mucopurulent sputum, often lasting months to years.
