Pollen allergies affect over 40 % of allergic people, and is becoming more relevant, as they are increasing, due to climate changes. Seasonal allergy to the pollen of plants is a major cause of disfunction and impairment function of aerial tract. Among all plants, species from Asteraceae family have a major potential to cause allergy due to their active substances from the pollen grain. The morphology of the pollen plays an important role in elucidating the complex mechanisms of pollen induced allergy (pollinosis). The aim of this article was to present the morphological characterization of the pollen grains from 8 plants from Asteraceae family (mugwort, chicory, dandelion, marigold, chamomile, ragweed, sweet wormwood, and chrysanthemum). Different shapes and dimensions of the pollen grains of these plants may lead to specific symptoms and intensities of allergic reactions.
