Amputation refers to the removal of a limb or a segment of a limb, usually an arm/hand or leg. Amputation can occur following a trauma (traumatic amputation) or a surgical intervention. Amputation in vascular surgery is rarely practiced at the level of the arms; instead, vascular surgeons frequently amputate fingers or toes, in more severe cases, without vascular reserve, ending up with leg, leg or even thigh amputations. Trauma is the main cause of amputation, affecting especially young, active, male patients, involved in professional or recreational activities that involve physical effort at the level of the thoracic limb, or in the case of road accidents.
