Our study aims to determine the main motivational factors for increasing employees performance. Methodology: The sample consisted of 25 employees of a multinational company in Romania, who achieved professional performance above expectations in the last year. Participants completed a professional motivation questionnaire, afterwards were interviewed about motivational factors. Results: The dominant type of motivation is extrinsic, the greatest needs of the participants being related to esteem and respect. Fulfilling these needs is especially important in the manager-employee relationship. The needs of self-realization, related to intrinsic motivation, are on the third place in the hierarchy established by the participants. Conclusions: For employees with professional performance above expectations, motivational strategies focused on satisfying the needs for recognition of prestige and professional achievements can be used, especially in the relationship with the manager and, subsequently, throughout the entire organization.
