Bronchiectasis is an abnormal and permanent dilation of the bronchi. It can be either focal, involving the airways or a limited region of the lung parenchyma, or it can be diffuse, involving the airways in a wider distribution.Bronchial dilatation of bronchiectases is associated with destructive and inflammatory changes depending on the caliber of the airways from medium size to subsegmental bronchi. Airborne inflammation is primarily mediated by neutrophils and results in the regulation of enzymes such as elastase and matrix metalloproteinases.Bronchiectasis is a consequence of inflammation and destruction of the structural components of the bronchial walls.
