Lung cancer is the phenotypic consequence of an accumulation of genetic changes in airway epithelial cells that result in unrestrained cellular proliferation.The genetic andmolecular changes that typify lung cancer are complex and not yet fully understood.Initial studiesin the 1960swere performed using cytogenetics, and they allowed for developments in molecular biology to unravel some of the mystery of oncogenes. Although oncogenes were very much at the leading edge in the 1980s, in the early 1990s tumor suppressor genes (recessive oncogenes or antioncogenes) added immensely to our understanding of tumorigenesis. Currently much interest is focused on the influence of these genetic factors on the cell cycle and on programmed cell death, or apoptosis.
