Obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) is one of the most common sleep-related breathing disorder that has been associated with increased risk for endothelial dysfunction, inflammation, oxidative stress, increased coagulation and metabolic disorder. OSAS has a complex range of factors that can induce hypercoagulability. Von Willebrand factor (VWF) is one of the most important biomarkers that assesses vascular endothelial function and plays an important role in hemostasis. The objective of the current study was to assess the relationship between OSAS severity and VWF levels in patients with clinical suspicion of OSAS. The study population consisted of 83 patients. Patients were divided into four groups according to OSAS severity. The study showed that VWF levels increased correspondingly to OSAS severity. These results suggest that OSAS severity has a considerable impact on blood clotting markers and coagulability status, which can influence the onset of cardiovascular diseases and complications.
