Introduction
This study aims to establish a conduct in the management of thepatients with chronic constipation, directing the diagnosis and treatment, and using the experience of a hospital with a center of excellence in colorectal surgery.
Matherial and Method
This is a retrospective study and its purpose is to assess pediatric patients who were diagnosed with chronic constipation between January 2017 and October 2020 in Ponderas Academic Hospital in the Pediatric Surgery Department. The statistics were derived according to the biostatistics recommendations in current medical practice.
Results
A representative sample of 122 patients, the patients average age at the first examination was 4 years and 3 months. The primary reason for consultation was for constipation, some also having associated abdominal pain, bloating, pain with defecation, nausea and rectal bleeding. Most patients were diagnosed with habitual constipation, only 3 patients being diagnosed and treated for congenital megacolon. The surgical technique used for the three patients were laparoscopic Duhamel trans abdomino-perineal recto-rectal pull-through.
Conclusions
After doing a careful anamnesis and clinical examination, the investigation protocol stops for most patients. Only a few of them need abdominal ultrasound, irigography or rectal biopsies. To prevent complications, early, personalized diagnosis and treatment is needed.
