Zolpidem is a non-benzodiazepine hypnotic agent and belongs to the class of imidazopyridines which by selectively binding to the omega-1 receptor subtype (ω1), it acts on the GABAA receptor. Although zolpidem has a good safety profile compared to other compounds, due to its side effects consisting of dose-dependent anterograde amnesia, it has been used for criminal purposes. In this review we presented the most relevant aspects regarding the pharmacotoxicological profile of zolpidem.
