The diagnosis of breast cancer can have a major impact on the psychological status of patients. The medical family history, oncological or psychiatric, can influence the attitude towards the disease. The aim of this study was to identify possible correlations between medical history and various psychological areas, depression, anxiety, selfesteem and emotional distress. 58 patients with preoperative breast cancer and 61 patients with breast lumpshave been evaluated while waiting for the histopathological result. The oncological medical history was correlated in both groups with mild depression and insignificant anxiety, while the cases without oncological history showed moderately severe depression and significant anxiety. Patients with breast cancer and psychiatric history showed a lower potential to develop anxiety or depressive disorders when faced with a cancer diagnosis. Patients in both groups, without a psychiatric history, most often develop anxiety disorders with a significant intensity, when confronted with the idea of cancer. The oncological or psychiatric medical history was associated in all patients with self-esteem and the profile of emotional distress at very low, low and medium level. Identifying the family history as well as the psychological evaluation on several fields can help the psycho-oncologist to identify the coping styles for a correct management of the psychological suffering.
